Present continuous

- In chapter 3 we saw the past continuous 

- This chapter (5) we are going to do the present continuous to talk about the future

past continuous?

Past continuous:

was/were + infinitive (= whole verb) + ing

Dutch: 'was/waren aan het...', 'zaten te....'

"He was reading a book when the lights went off."

Something was happening for some time. 

present continuous?

Present continuous:

am/are/is + infinitive (= whole verb) + ing

Dutch: 'ben/zijn aan het...', 'zitten te....'

"He is reading a book tonight. He isn't working."

Something is happening for some time NOW. 

Now make your own sentence with present continuous:

future tense?

Using present continuous 

to talk about 

the future:

-->  To talk about appointments in the near future

--> Time and place are fixed

To be (not) + infinitive (= whole verb) + ing

"She is meeting him at five."

Using present continuous 

to talk about 

the future:

LET OP:

• Plan/not fixed? --> to be (not) going to: "I'm not going to see her anytime soon."
• uncontrollable things (the weather, etc) --> to be (not going to): "It's going to rain in an hour."
