The SHIT Rule

The SHIT Rule has to do with She, He, and IT.
The rule is:
If the subject (onderwerp) is a she, he or it, the verb gets +s.
All other subjects = main verb (hele werkwoord)

 I dance                   She dances
You dance                 He dances
We ..........                       It ............
They ...........

Questions

To make a present simple question, you have to put the verb do in front of the sentence:
I like ice cream.     becomes      Do I like ice cream?

If the subject is a he, she or it, you have to use does
Also, look at what happens with the +s of the original verb!

Bob plays football.   becomes   Does Bob play football?

Rule
  • you make questions with do/does + main verb
  • exceptions .......
  • de hulpwerkwoorden: to be (am-is-are), can, have got

Questions
Remember:
The verb 'to be' is a special one. So are 'can' and 'have got'.
If its the first verb in the sentence: just switch it with the subject.

She is very beautiful.  becomes  Is she very beautiful?
They can swim very well.             Can they swim very well?
He has got a dog.                           Has he got a dog?

But...
He has a dog.                                      Does he have a dog?

The Present Simple
Negations

Now you know how to make a normal present simple sentence and questions in the present simple.

Now we are going to look at negations. (ontkenningen)

Slide 24 - Tekstslide

Slide 25 - Video

The Present Simple
Negations

Negations tell you that something is not happening.
You can see the word not in negations (=ontkenning),
but almost always as a short form: n't
 as in don't or doesn't.

An example:
She doesn't swim very well.
I don't know.

de komma ' vervangt in het Engels altijd een letter, in dit geval een o
n't = not
don't = do not
doesn't = does not
Dus nu weet je altijd WAAR je de ' moet zetten!

Slide 26 - Tekstslide

The Present Simple
Negations

So you make a negation by adding don't or doesn't to the sentence. Think about the SHIT Rule! (do/does)

So not like this:          I like not cookies.

But like this:                I don't like cookies

Slide 27 - Tekstslide

The Present Simple
Negations

Look at what happens to the verb in this sentence when we turn it into a negation:

He plays video games every day.

He doesn't play video games every day.

The 's' after the verb disappears after doesn't.
The same happens with the questions, do you remember?

Slide 28 - Tekstslide

If it's the first verb in the sentence: just add not.

She sings very beautiful.     She doesn't sing very beautiful.
We are at home.                   We aren't at home.
They can swim very well.    They can't swim very well.
                                                  They cannot swim very well.
He has got a dog.                  He hasn't got a dog.
