What is Present Simple?

Present simple is used to describe actions that happen regularly, habits or things that are generally true.

Explain the meaning of present simple and provide examples. Encourage students to think of their own examples.

Affirmative Sentences

In affirmative sentences, we use the base form of the verb. For example: I eat breakfast at 7am every day.

Explain how to form affirmative sentences and give examples. Provide a practice exercise for students to complete.

Negative Sentences

In negative sentences, we use the auxiliary verb 'do not' or 'does not' + the base form of the verb. For example: I do not like coffee.

Explain how to form negative sentences and give examples. Provide a practice exercise for students to complete.

Question Sentences

In question sentences, we use the auxiliary verb 'do' or 'does' + the subject + the base form of the verb. For example: Do you play soccer?

Third Person Singular

When the subject is third person singular (he, she, it), we add 's' or 'es' to the base form of the verb. For example: She watches TV every night.

Irregular Verbs

Some verbs are irregular in the present simple, and do not follow the regular rules. For example: I have a car.

Provide a list of irregular verbs and explain that they do not follow the regular rules. Encourage students to think of their own examples.

Complete the following sentences using the present simple: I _____ (play) tennis every weekend. She _____ (not like) chocolate. _____ (do) you speak Spanish?
