What is Purple Friday?

Purple Friday (Paarse Vrijdag) is a special day celebrated in many schools in the Netherlands to show support for LGBTQ+ students (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and others). On this day, students and teachers wear purple clothes to raise awareness about the importance of acceptance and equality for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It’s a way to create a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can be themselves without fear of bullying or discrimination.

Purple Friday started in 2010 and has grown each year, with more schools joining in to celebrate the diversity of all students. The idea is to encourage respect and kindness and to show solidarity with people who may feel different or face challenges because of their identity.

The day also helps to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues, like bullying and discrimination, and emphasizes that everyone deserves to feel safe and respected at school. It’s an important reminder that we should treat each other with dignity and support those who might need it.
