Adjectives and Adverbs

Adjectives (bijvoeglijke naamwoorden) and adverbs (bijwoorden)

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

An adjective says something about a noun (person, animal, thing) and answers the questions which...? what...? what kind of...? (welk...? welke...? wat voor...?)

The color is black.
My father is strong.
This is a quick cat.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

An adverb says something about the verb (action) in the sentense and answers the questions hoe? op welke manier?
For example:
The man walks slowly.
My granny drives carefully.
His mother sings beautifully.
He speaks quietly.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

In Dutch an adjective and an adverb look almost always the same, but in English they are usually different:

Dit is een mooi meisje.
This is a beautiful girl.

Zij zingt mooi.
She sings beautifully.

  (Wat voor meisje is zij?)
(Hoe zingt zij?)

Most English adverbs are made by adding suffix -ly to the adjective:

Be careful with some verbs (werkwoorden), such as look, appear and feel. Ze kunnen twee dingen betekenen in het Engels: een dynamische activiteit (je ziet de beweging) of een statische activiteit (je ziet geen beweging).
Bij dynamische activiteiten gebruik een bijwoord (adverb):
She is looking angrily at him. (Ze kijkt boos naar hem.)
Bij statische activiteiten gebruik een bijvoeglijk naamwoord (adjective):
She looks angry today. (Ze lijkt boos vandaag).
