Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Today
  •  Of course: word order!
  • At the end of the lesson you will be able to put a scrambled sentence in the right order.
  • Second hour: Work on your presentation/credits

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Analyse this sentence:
"We never have to work on sundays"
What type of words? In which order? You don't need to use the correct terms, just write down what you see.

Slide 3 - Open vraag

Word order
  •  English is a SVO language: Subject, verb, object
  • I have been walking to the store
  • Dutch is SOV: Subject, object, verb
  • Ik ben naar de winkel gelopen.
  • So English and Dutch are different types of languages based on word order!

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Word order rules
  • First subject than verbs (onderwerp - gezegde)
  • All verb go together: "I have told her"
  • Indications of time go at the beginning or the end of a sentence: "I talked to him yesterday"
  • Indications of place go before indications of time if they both occur in a sentence:
  • "We can eat something at the station at 6 o'clock"

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Word order rules
  • Adverbs signalling time: always, never, sometimes often, seldom, usually. + the words: already, soon, almost, also, probably, nearly, certainly go before the verb.
  • "I often get headaches when we talk about grammar."
  • These words go after the first auxiliary when there are multiple verbs in the sentence:
  • She had nearly lost all of her money

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Word order rules
  •  However, if there is a form of to be in the sentence? These adverbs are placed after the form of to be:
  • He was also at the party/We were seldom in our hotel room
  • In questions these adverbs come after the subject:
  • Will that band also visit the Hague?
  • In some instances English switches the subject and the verbs around: Jenny liked him a lot -> So did Kim.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Put the sentence in the right order:
have / garden / hours / playing / in / been / three / the / girls / the / for
(Wie Doet Wat Waar Wanneer)

Slide 8 - Open vraag

Put the sentence in the right order:
already / the / it / worse / very / situation / getting / is / economic / bad, / and / is
(Wie Doet Wat Waar Wanneer)

Slide 9 - Open vraag

Let's get to work
  •  If you answered the questions correctly you can start working: Unit 4, Lesson 3 exercise 12.
  • Done? Do the vocabulary exercises of Unit 2/or versterk jezelf.
  • If you made one or more mistakes we will do one or two questions from of course together.

Sometimes there are multiple clauses (bijzinnen).
You can recognise this when there are multiple subjects and verb phrases.
"[Jack bought a drone yesterday] and [he already broke it]."
The same rules apply, but keep this in mind!
