Reproduction
  • Reproduction (or procreation, breeding) = the biological process by which new individual organisms ("offspring") are produced from their "parents"
  • Without reproduction, there would not be as much life possible as we have now

Two types of reproduction:
  1. Sexual reproduction: fusion of gamets required                            - Lots of variety         
  2. Asexual reproduction: no gamets needed                                         - No variety

Sperm or semen?
-Testes produce sperm cells.
-Epididymes store sperm cells-->release during orgasm.
-seminal vesicles+ prostate add fluid and nutrients--> activate sperm. Fluid=semen.

Erections
-Blood vessel to spongy erectile tissue relaxes.
-Blood fills erectile tissue-->penis becomes erect (hard).
-Erections can happen any time, uncontrolled. Especially during puberty.

Ejaculation
-Ejaculation is male orgasm.
-Amount of semen: average tea spoon of semen.
-Sperm cell 3 parts: head with nucleus, midpiece with energy, tail for 'swimming'.

  • In the ovary eggs are ripen in a follicle.
  • After ovulation (eruption of follicle)                                                    an eggs goes into the oviduct.
  • Possible fertilaztion happens in  
the fallopian tube (oviduct).
  • No fertilization? Menstruation starts.

Bacteria that enter through the urethra and travel into the bladder can cause a bladder infection. Discuss with a student why bladder infections are more common in females than in males.
