The task

The following quotes are taken from the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Try to put the coming quotes into reported speech; pay attention to tense shifts.

1. "the Reverend Master Dimmesdale, her godly pastor, takes it very grievously to his heart that such a scandal has come upon his congregation."

2. "When he found the eyes of Hester Prynne fastened on his own, and saw that she appeared to recognize him, he slowly and calmly raised his finger, made a gesture with it in the air, and laid it on his lips."

3. "She had not known the weight until she felt the freedom."

4. "Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you".

Digging deeper

1. You have to brainstorm a list of people who might ask you questions: For example, a police officer, teacher.....

2. You have only to report something that someone ( from your list) asked, without revealing who it was.

3. For example: this person asked me if i had my driver's license

4. Your classmates must guess: It was the police officer
