Where were we?
  • What event triggered the First World War?

Russia under the Tsar
  • Inequality

  •  Tsar and nobility owned most of the land

  • Peasants were poor and had no rights

  • There was no democracy - the Tsar had all the power

Bloody Sunday
  • 22 januari 1905: large demonstration 

  • The Tsar ordered his army to suppress the uprising by force. Hundreds of unarmed protesters were killed or wounded

  • But the Tsar did install the Duma - a parliament with very little power

A new ideology
  •  A small group of people started to resist: the communists

  • They believed that everybody in society should be equal. The state takes care of everything - nobody would steal or go hungry

  • They were prepared to use violence to gain power

Revolution
  • Russia was suffering because of World War I: lots of losses, famine, poverty

  • The communists promised a better world: equality and no more hunger

  • In February 1917 uprisings broke out. Russian soldiers refused to fire on their own people

  • The Tsar gave up his throne. 
  • Workers and soldiers united to govern in soviets 

  • The new government could not solve Russia's problems

  • In October 1917 a second revolution by Bolsheviks overturned the government

  • Tsar and his family were taken prisoner - for their own 'safety'

  • Lenin was afraid supporters would try to free them

  • 17 July 1918: The Tsar and his family were shot
