• You know which climates there are on Earth.
• You understand what influence the latitude has on climates.
• You can explain why vegetation differs between climates.

Weather: Condition of the air at a certain moment in a certain place.

Climate: The average weather over a period of 30 years.

From equator to the poles

Tropical rainforest climate

Savanna climate
Steppe climate
Desert climate

    Maritime climate
    Continental climate
    Tundra climate
    Polar climate

Tropical rainforest

• at the Equator
• always warm
• it rains almost every day
• little difference between seasons

Savanna

• lies to the north and south of the tropical rainforest
• always warm
• rainy season provides change, dry and wet periods in the year
• trees grow

Steppe

• borders on the savanna climate
• never really gets cold
• rainy season is shorter than in the savanna climate
• no trees grow anymore

Desert

• usually borders the steppe climate
• warm during the day
• very dry, on average less than 250 mm of precipitation per year
• rock deserts and sometimes only sand

Maritime (temperate sea)

• lies in the vicinity of seas and oceans
• difference between summer and winter temperatures is not that great
• summer and winter season

Continental

• summer warm
• cold winter
• shorter growing season compared with maritime climate

Tundra

• in the summer the temperature rises above 0 ⁰C in winter drops below 0 ⁰C
• summer is short and winter is long
• ground frozen for a long period
• no trees grow

Polar

• temperature always remains below 0 ⁰C
• when the temperature is below 0 ⁰C all year round and the area is above 1500 meters, this is called a high mountain climate
