Holidays!

Slide 2 - Woordweb

What are holidays?
The word holiday comes from the Old English word "holy day". The word originally referred only to special religious days. Modern use varies geographically. In North America, it means any dedicated day or period of celebration. Holiday traditions are ritualistic practices that we do as part of either religion or personal beliefs.

Sinterklaas
According to the folklore it is based on the bishop Nicholas. Sinterklaas delivers gifts and arrives from Spain on a steamboat. He has a white horse called Amigo and a helper named Pete. They make sure children who have been good get presents and children who have not, go in the sack and are taken to Spain.

Shoeing
The tradition of shoe-setting dates back to the fifteenth century. In Utrecht, this is said to have been done as early as 1427 in the St. Nicholas Church. On Sinterklaas evening, some money is put in shoes, which is donated to the poor. Later, children would also be allowed to put a shoe or clog at home. The next morning there are treats in it.
