Product Design

THE GOAL
Have a look around the high street and you will see examples of designed products in many
different forms. From cereal packaging to clothes, all designs have to start from an initial brief
given by a client. The ability to produce designs is an important skill for an artist and designer,
as it helps you to develop work from a specific starting point to a final outcome.
In this unit, you will learn about the design development cycle and the different stages you need to go through to take your work from an initial idea to a final design. You will look at different types of briefs from a range of clients. You will create a portfolio of work that showcases your skills in being able to meet the needs of a client.

A CLIENT BRIEF
A client brief is a clear description of what a client (the person or company asking for help) wants you to design or create. It explains:

The Goal: What the product is for and what it needs to do.
The Target Audience: Who will use the product.
The Key Requirements: Any specific features or details the client needs (e.g., size, materials, style).
The Problem to Solve: What issue or challenge the product should fix.
Think of it as a guide to make sure the design meets the client’s needs.
