Chapter 3: paragraph 3

At the end of this lesson you will know:
  • why there is always a risk of flooding
  • how the Netherlands protects itself against water
  • why the sea level is rising
  • why the ground in the Netherlands is sinking

  • Language aim:
  • You can explain the definition of relative sea-level rise.
  • You are able to explain the word subsidence
  • You are able to explain why the netherlands is on a seesaw since last ice age.

Below sea level

Flood risk in the Netherlands from
- the sea = large part of the country is below sea level
- rivers

The Netherlands is protected by dikes and dunes
The Low Netherlands consists of polders: areas where the water level is controlled using man-made methods.

Water boards (waterschap) have 3 tasks:
- water safety
- water purification
- water management (enough fresh water)

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

You know 3 reasons for subsidence in the Netherlands.
  1. "Seesaw" (wip) after the last ice age.
  2. Pumping away rising groundwater.
  3. The extraction of "minerals".

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

SUBSIDENCE = verzakking

during/after the last ice age

As scandinavia is on the other side of the seesaw.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Causes of subsidence
What are the causes of subsidence?

1.In the last ice age > thick layer of ice pushed down the Earth’s crust > ice disappeared, ground in Scandinavia ‘sprang’ back again> ground in the north of the Netherlands sank

2.Pumping away groundwater in the Low Netherlands >the ground sinks > worst in peatlands

3.Due to extraction of natural resources > natural gas in Groningen

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

You can explain the definition of relative sea-level rise.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Assignment
Write a summary about the relative sea-level rising.
Why is it happening?

Use the words: subsidence, seesaw, relative sea-level rising, glacier.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

At the end of this lesson you will know:
  • Which area would flood without dikes and dunes
  • How is sand suppletion used to strenghten the coast?

Language aim:
  • You are able to explain what water measures are
  • You can explain what sand suppletion is

Assignment
What: List all water measures that have been taken troughout the Netherlands.
How: find it in the book, read it from the maps, find it on google if you like
Time: take 10 minutes to do this.

Finished? Start working on exercise 9 and 10 by using the atlas. When those are done you may work on exercise 7 and 8.
Finished with that......start working on your sustainable island
