The world broken down by level of development 

Core countries

• These are the most developed (rich) countries
• They are the front-runners
• They have a high productivity

Semi-periphery

• These are countries that are making good progress when it comes to development.
• --> followers

Periphery

• This is the large group of developing countries
• --> stragglers
• The least developed countries (LDCs) are the poorest group in the periphery.
• Sub-Saharan Africa is the poorest part of the
  world.
