Adjective (bijvoeglijk naamwoord)
Says something about the noun (zelfstandig naamwoord)
  • people
  • animals
  • plants
  • things
e.g.
  • The exciting film
  • The pretty actress
  • The new theater
  • He seems nice in interviews.
NOTE: Usually placed before the noun but after certain linking verbs e.g. to be, to look, to appear, to seem

Adverb (bijwoord)
Says something about the verb (werkwoord)
So how you do something
NOTE: usually placed after the main verb (hoofd werkwoord)
e.g.
  • The actress played the role really well.
  • The girl sings beautifully
  • The audience clapped very loudly

Adverbs of frequency (bijwoord)
Says something about the frequency or the way in which something happens
Note: placed before the main verb (hoofd werkwoord) but after the "to be" verb
e.g.
  • I have never been to a concert before.
  • We are usually home in the evening in time to watch the news.
  • The audience is always very enthusiastic.
