Class Expectations (5min)
Read over classroom expectations for the Little Fingers class.

Have students describe what these behaviors look like and don't look like.

Ex: A good choice is following directions. A silly choice is to be laughing at your friends.

Movement Activity (5 minutes)
  • Begin with a movement activity to allow students to practice listening, maintain a steady beat, and release excess energy before class.

Rhythm Echoes (5min)
Teacher Reference Only - DO NOT SHOW STUDENTS

1. Have students show steady beat on a body part. Read rhythms 4 beats at a time on a neutral syllable "bah" or using 1 and 2 syllable words such as "pear" and "apple" for students to repeat as they show steady beat (quarter notes do not get a sound, but rather, a pulse).

4. Read rhythms 4 beats at a time using "ta" and "ta-ti" for students to repeat

Rhythm Echos (5 minutes)
Review the Previous slide for Rhythm Echos
  1. Read rhythms on a neutral syllable "bah" or using 1 and 2-syllable words such as "pear" and "apple" for students to repeat

  3. Read rhythms again, but using "ta" (quarter notes) and "ta-ti" (paired eighth notes) for students to repeat

Steady Beat Review (5min)
1. Review the part of the body that has a steady beat (heart). Discuss what that feels like.

2. Review Beat video

Rhythm Game (5min)

1. Instructor improvises various combinations of "walk" and "tiptoe"

2. Ask students what two movements they will demonstrate

3. Ask students to stand and demonstrate walk and tiptoe. Remind students of their personal and shared space. When performing, they only use their personal space.

4. Ask students to demonstrate walk or tiptoe as teacher says patterns (see slide). If time allows create different tiptoe/walk patterns for students to perform.

5. Discuss how many sounds (syllables) were in "walk" (1) and how many sounds (syllables) were in "tiptoe" (2)

Keeping a Steady Beat (5min)

1. Show this page to students 

2. Ask what these are (beats)

3. Discuss how to track when reading (read left to right, NOT right to left)

4. Have students practice tracking heart beats as they say "beat, beat, beat, beat". Have students practice reading beat with and without the labeling but end with hearts that are not labeled.

5. Improvise rhythms as students track beats, students echo

Movement Activity (5 minutes)
  1. Select another movement activity to practice active listening, steady beat, and to provide a brain break.
  2. This allows for students to practice listening, steady beat, and get the wiggles out before class. Click on the link to choose a movement activity.

Tonal Practice (5 mins)

Instruct students to echo the teacher's actions.
  1. Sing patterns one measure at a time for students to echo using body piano and neutral syllable "bum".
  2. Students repeat
  3. Sing patterns one measure at a time again for students to echo using solfege (do, re, mi)
  4. Students repeat

  1. Review hand signs for do, re, and mi
  2. Practice hand signs with Campfire Song from Prodigies
Make sure you are logged into Prodigies prior to class and have it open in a separate tab.

Learn Song (5min)
Teacher Reference Only - DO NOT SHOW STUDENTS

1. Sing "Dinosaur" to students.

2. Ask students to answer the question after singing song again - "What kind of animal is in my song?" (dinosaur)

3. Sing song again, ask "Where is the dinosaur walking" (through the valley"

4. Sing song again, ask "What are we going to do if the dinosaur is sad?" (rub their belly)

5. Students learn to sing a song - Instructor sings the first phrase, "Dinosaur, dinosaur," students echo, instructor sings the second phrase "walking through the valley," students echo, instructor sings first 2 phrases together "dinosaur, dinosaur walking through the valley," instructor continues in this pattern until students know entire song.
