Betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden (p. 143 8.4 coursebook)

Een betrekkelijk voornaamwoord heeft verwijst naar een woord(en) dat er vlak voor staat. we gebruiken het om twee zinnen aan elkaar te plakken.

Bijvoorbeeld:

1. The man worked in that office. He was my neighbour. ( twee zinnen)

The man who worked in that office is my neighbour. ( 1 zin)

Welke moet je kennen en wanneer gebruik je ze?

Who / Which / That ( that hoeven jullie niet te weten) 

Wanneer gebruik je who?       bij personen

Voorbeeld: It was Madison who was so nice to me. 

Wanneer gebruik je which?   bij dingen

She missed the meeting which the Drama teacher held last week.

Wanneer mag je who en which weglaten?

Je mag het weglaten als het geen onderwerp in de bijzin is.

-She's the football coach (who) I admire the most.( I is het onderwerp in de bijzin; who mag dus weg, maar zet het tussen haakjes)

-That song is from the musical (which) we're doing at school. ( we is het onderwerp in de bijzin; which mag dus weg, maar zet het tussen haakjes)

Dat betekent dat je het dus niet mag weglaten als het wel onderwerp van de zin is. Example: She is that enthusiastic teacher who teaches us English.
