In 1066, war broke out between England and France
Why?
In the feudal system, it was not always entirely clear who had the first right of succession.
On October 14, 1066, the English and French met at Hastings
William II won and wanted to centralize the government to gain more power himself

Het kleed van Bayeux
Dat komt door  het kleed dat is gemaakt na de slag. 
Het tapijt van Bayeux is een borduurwerk van 70 meter lang en 50 cm hoog, dat de geschiedenis uitbeeldt van de slag bij Hastings in 1066. Het tapijt is vernoemd naar de stad Bayeux in Frankrijk en werd vermoedelijk gemaakt in 1068.
Het laat zich lezen als een stripverhaal: in een groot aantal scènes worden de voorgeschiedenis en de slag zelf behandeld.

The Hundred Years' War
  • England and France came to war with each other again in 1337.
  • It lasted until 1453 --> Hundred Years War.
  • Again, the issue was one of succession to the throne.
  • At the beginning of the Hundred Years' War, the English were stronger.
  • But the odds are turning
  • --> Joan of Arc took charge of the French army
  • By the end of the Hundred Years' War, all of France had been
    recaptured from the English.

Consequences
  • -->  Nationalism
  • = love of one's own country and people
  • England:
  • --> The king lost much power to the nobility and the
    English parliament.
  • France:
  • --> The French parliament (States General) had virtually
    no influence over the French monarch.
