The Open Window

Vera tells Mr Nuttel about a tragic incident in which Mrs. Sappleton lost her husband and her two brothers. She also tells him that her aunt still hopes that they will come back and therefore keeps the window open.

The Open Window is an excellent example of a short story in which the writer illustrates two contrasted attitudes towards life
- Mr Nuttel is nervous and uncertain
- Vera is dramatic with a wild imagination

Hyperbole
an exaggerated statement that's not meant to be taken literally by the reader. It is often used for comedic effect and/or emphasis.

"I’m so hungry I could eat a horse."

The speaker will not literally eat an entire horse but it emphasizes how starved the speaker feels.

An example of hyperbole can be seen in line 5, as the subject of the poem has an “eternal summer” that will “never fade” (line 9).

The hyperbolic statement helps strengthen the idea that the subject of the poem is constant and much more predictable and, therefore, more beautiful than summer.
