Passive Voice
Why do we use it? 
- Focus is on the action, not the person doing the action. 
- When who does the action is not known or not as important.

Examples: 

Active Sentence 
Ms. Howes stole my sandwich!

Passive
My sandwich was stolen! (Who did it? Not known or not important). 

My sandwich was stolen by Ms. Howes. (Action more important than who did the action.)

Present Simple
Active Sentence           passive sentence
s/h/it rule                        is/are + past participle (3rd form)

She watches TV at the moment.      TV is watched at the moment (by her). 
They cook dinner for the sick.            Dinner is cooked for the sick (by them). 



Present Continuous
Active Sentence           passive sentence
is/are + verb+ing           is being + past participle (3rd form)

She is eating the last slice of cake.        The last slice of cake is being eaten (by her). 
Sam is painting a portrait of Obama.A portrait of Obama is being painted (by Sam).

Present Simple
Active Sentence           passive sentence
s/h/it rule                        is/are + past participle (3rd form)
