Re-cap for the tenses
Present Simple: Mainly used for facts, habits and truths.
She is afraid of the dark.      Dolphins can swim - facts
Unicorns don't exist  - truths
I cycle to school every day - I clean my teeth twice a day - habits
Present continuous: When we are talking about activites, temporary situations and things that are happening around now - (and future arrangements). The boys are carrying a big suitcase. (verb to be + verb+ing)
The twins are wearing identical clothes. - events happening now

Perfect tenses (have)
Present perfect: It connects the past to the present, so it is useful for talking about life experiences.  Peter has been ill so he has missed a lot of school. - has/have and the past participle.
Present perfect continuous: For something that started in the past and is still continuing. Peter has been feeling ill all day.

Past tenses
Past simple: expresses a completed past action. 
We played tennis last week. 
I worked in London in 2011
John left two minutes ago.  

The normal rule is to add -ed or -d.  There are many common irregular verbs. See the list on the next slide.

Past Continuous
Form: Was/ Were + verb+ing
  1. The past continuous expresses a past activity that has duration. You were making a lot of noise last night, were you having a party? 
  2. The activity was in progress before and probably after a time in the past. What were you doing last night? "I was watching TV, when I woke up the sun was shining".

The past continuous is often used together with the past simple to show an interupted event in the past
I was driving home when I ran over a cat.
I was having a shower when the phone rang.
Jane arrived when I was eating my dinner.

Past perfect
Form: had +ed / had + past participle
I had left already.   
They had eaten their meal

Used to express an action in the past which happened before another action in the past.
When I arrived at the cinema, the film had already started.

Past perfect continuous
Form: had + been + -ing  ( Tip: not in the test!)
The Past Perfect Continuous shows us that something started in the past and continued up until another time in the past. You can use time expressions like 'for' and 'since' with this tense: "They had been sleeping for an hour before I went to bed.
