Quick recap: reported speech
Direct speech: when someone speaks directly to you
Indirect/reported speech: when you report to a third person what was said to you

Direct: William said, "I am heir to the throne."
Indirect: William said (that) he was heir to the throne.

Remember how it works?
When turning direct speech into indirect speech we use 
back shifting -->we move to the nearest past tense on the timeline

Reporting verbs
Reporting verbs are used to report what someone has said. Besides say and tell, there are many other options:

Pay attention: the patterns that follow these verbs are different!

1 verb + infinitive: 
agree, claim, decide, offer, promise, refuse, threaten

- We refused to buy another ticket

2 verb + object + infinitive: 
advise, beg, encourage, invite, order, permit, persuade, remind, tell, warn, urge

- The teacher encouraged him to do his homework.

3 verb (+that) + clause: 
accept, admit, claim, doubt, explain, promise, recommend, say, suggest, announce

- He claimed (that) he was overcharged at the restaurant.

- They promised me  (that) they would pick me up.

5 verb + ing: 
admit, deny, recommend, regret, suggest

apologise for, insist on, object to

 - He insisted on picking her up after the concert.

accuse someone of, blame someone for, congratulate someone ON, discourage someone from, forgive someone for

- They congratulated her on winning the prize.

- The pupils knew what to do when the fire broke out.
