Defining vs. Non-defining relative clauses

Defining relative clauses: give essential information to understand the sentence. We need the relative to understand the sentence.

Example: That's the car which we hired for the prom.
Students who go to prom usually have fun.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Defining vs. Non-defining relative clauses
Non-defining relative clauses: give EXTRA information. If we remove the relative clause, the sentence still makes sense. You recognize non-defining relative clauses in a sentence by the commas.
Example: The hall, where the dance was held, was huge!
Our Maths teacher, whose daughter also graduates this year, will lead the ceremony.
