SpeakOut lesson 4a: Success

In this lesson, Ss discuss rules and advice related to being successful. They start by completing a questionnaire from which they learn vocabulary related to success. Then they listen to a podcast on the topic of rules for success. From this listening, Ss review and practise modals for rules and advice. They listen to and produce silent letters in mustn’t, should, etc., and describe rules for success in different situations. Ss then discuss advice about how to be successful in a new company and give their opinions about it. Finally, they write an email giving advice.

New Year's Resolutions

Blue Monday January 15th

 

I tried to lose weight last year, but I failed. 

I was trying to get fit when I fell of my bike. 

I gave up my New Year's Resolutions.

Why do they call it Blue Monday?

"Every year, the third Monday of January is dubbed “Blue Monday”. The theory goes that this is the time of year when we're all cold, broke and riddled with guilt that our new year's resolutions to get fit, drink less alcohol, and be a better human being have fallen by the wayside."

Modal verbs

De Engelse modal verbs zijn hulpwerkwoorden, en komen in een zin voor in combinatie met een ander werkwoord. 

De modale hulpwerkwoorden geven de 'mood' van de zin aan, zoals een bepaalde mogelijkheid, de waarschijnlijkheid, of de noodzaak van een bepaalde boodschap.

Modal verbs

Have to/ need to/ must

We use have to/need to/must when we talk about rules and things that are necessary. 

You have no choice, or it’s a very strong suggestion:

• You must talk to your manager about the problem.
• We have to pay tax on the money we earn.
• I need to get up early to catch my flight tomorrow.

Should/Shouldn't

We use should/shouldn’t when we are giving advice. 

We use should to talk about things that are a good idea, and shouldn’t to talk about things that are not a good idea:

• You should come to work in smart clothes.
• You shouldn’t arrive late to meetings.
• Should I wear a tie?
