Cardiac Cycle
The term 'cardiac cycle' = process of the heart contracting and the transportation of blood through the heart.
Cycle = what happens during 1 complete heart beat including filling of the heart with blood and empyting the heart.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Phases of the Cardiac Cycle
1) Atrial Diastole (Atria fill with blood)
2) Ventricular Diastole (Blood is pumpled from the Atria into the ventricles though the AV valves.
3) Atrial Systole (The AV valves close)
4) Ventricular Systole (semilunar valves open and the ventricles contract. Blood is forced from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery and from the left ventricle into the Aorta. Finally, the semilunar valves close and the cycle is completed.

(Level 3) Stroke Volume (SV)
  • Volume of blood pumped out of the heart by each ventricle during one contraction.
  • Measured in millilitres (ml) per beat.
  • Will vary and change depending on venous return, elasticity of the ventricles, contractility of ventricles, blood pressure in arteries leading from the heart.
  • Used in determining cardiac output (Q)
  • Q = SV x HR
