Harald Hardrada, the heir of King Cnut, wanted to re-establish Viking control over England. He was angry that Harold Godwinson had been crowned King of England, so he therefore prepared an invasion of England so he could claim the crown by force. Hardrada’s army arrived off the coast of Britain and started to raid and attack English towns. They then sailed up the river Humber, disembarked at Riccall, and defeated Anglo-Saxon forces at the Battle of Fulford. However Harold Godwinson had not been idle and was marching northwards with his saxon army to fight back against Hardrada. Godwinson’s army managed to march a distance of about 210miles, in only five days, enabling him to take the Vikings completely by surprise. The two armies met at Stamford Bridge, in Yorkshire, to do battle.
