They almost all perished before new supplies arrived in 1610.

were established by Britain in North America.
The Dutch, French and Spanish had NA colonies too.
Most settlers were farmers.
The colonies were very diverse (Mostly British, German & Dutch)

Self-rule?
The colonies had a high degree of self-government and independence.
It simply took too long to send messages back and forth.
The colonies were protected by
militias
.
Militias consisted of so called minute men.

Taxation
After war with France ended (1763) with a British victory at a high price.
Because the war took place in the Americas, Britain imposed a series of new taxes.
Result: Protests and a growing resistance.

Boston Tea Party (1773)
Protest against taxation on Tea.
A group called the
patriots
dumped 342 crates of tea in the harbour.
This led to harsh measures from the British government.
The patriots established their own government: the
