Natural increase: The difference between births and

deaths, given as a percentage.

Immigration - emigration = migration rate

Net migration: The difference between the number of

immigrants and emigrants.

Population distribution

Population distribution: The pattern of where people live in an area.

Densely populated: Many people live close to each other in these places.

Sparsely populated: Few people live in these places.

Population density: The number of people per km2

 Population growth =

(number of births – number of deaths) + (immigration rate – emigration rate)

Or:

Natural population growth + migration rate = population growth

Reflection

Country development and birth rate

Rule: the more developed a country is, the lower the birth rate

Or: the less developed a country is, the higher the birth rate

High birth rates in poor countries 

1. People think of children as a form of security (income)
   
2. No anticonception (access, knowledge, permittance)
   

Low birth rates in rich countries

1. Knowledge on and access to anticonception
   
2. Children are expensive (yes you are)
3. Elderly people don’t rely solely on their children for income and support
