Understand several situations in which present perfect tense is necessary to use

He lived there for 2 years - he does NOT live there anymore

He has lived there for 2 years - He still lives there

(or the impact of his having lived there is still visible)

Which was the present perfect?

1. He lived there for 2 years
2. he has lived there for 2 years

Present Perfect

Used for actions that happened in the past,

but which are still unfinished

If you have never done something before, or you still want to do it

Experience

Started in the past, but is unfinished

So use present perfect

before /lately /up till now /for / for how long /just 

already /never /ever /since /so far /yet

signal words :

(If you see these words in a sentence, you will most likely have to use the present perfect)

Exceptions

The action is finished, but you still use the present perfect

The action is finished but the results are more important.

I have lost my keys.
