Past Simple or Present Perfect?

I played tennis every weekend.

I have played tennis since I was ten.

Past Simple or Present Perfect?

I was always on time for English class.

I have never been late for an English class.

Past Simple or Present Perfect?

I eat breakfast every morning. - P.Simple

I have just eaten breakfast.

Past Simple

Something that happened in the past. It is over.

• habits
• general facts
• permanent situations

Present Perfect

Recently completed actions, actions with an impact on the present and completed actions with an unspecified time.

Signal words

Present Perfect: Signaalwoorden

already	- earlier than expected - affirmative (+) sentences - comes immediately before the main verb
just	- recently / a short time ago - affirmative sentences - come immediately before the main verb
yet	- it has not happened yet BUT we expect that it will probably happen. - negative sentences - yet comes at the end of the negative statement

Present Perfect: Signaalwoorden

never	nooit - Ik ben nooit daar geweest. 'at no time' and is a negative term. Example: I have never been to Brazil.
ever	Question sentences 'at any time' Example: Have you ever been to Brazil?
since	The word 'since' is used to refer to a time (an action that begun in the past and is still continuing). Example: from 2001 until now.
for	throughout (a period of time). Example: I have lived in Holland for ten years.

Signal Words: for + since

Used to describe an action that started in the past and still continues.

for - a week / a month / a year / ages... (how long)

since - 2012 / last Tuesday / the day we met (when - starting point)

What is the difference?

I have know him for ten years.

I have known him since I was ten years old.
