First, the name...

• It wasn't called the First World War until after the Second World War.
•  At first, people called it the Great War.

War before 1900

• Germany consisted out of all kinds of small states. The most important one was Prussia. 
• Otto von Bismarck (prime- minister of Prussia) wanted a great German empire. 

War before 1900

• France would never agree so the only way to achieve this (according to Bismarck) was through war.
• France lost the Franco-German War (1870-1871 )and was humiliated. 

They signed a peace treaty and proclaimed William I emperor of Germany in the Palace of Versailles.

Why was there tension and rivalry between Germany and France?
