Past simple
  • Something important that happened in the past;
  • Recognized by words like "Yesterday, last year, this morning, in 2013";
  • Regular verbs: word + -ed;
  • For example, "Called, helped, played";
  • Irregular verbs have different forms (learn by heart);
  • For example, "ran, sang, bought"

  • Negative and question sentences:
  • Did/didn't + verb;
  • For example, "Did you buy that?" "I didn't buy that."

  • Special cases regular verbs:
  • Ending in "-y" -> "-ied"
  • For example, "Try" becomes "Tried"
  • Ending in "-e" -> +-d
  • For example, "Arrange" becomes "Arranged"
  • Ending in short vowel -> double consonant + -ed
  • For example, "Plan" becomes "Planned"
  • More than one syllable + ending in "l" -> double "l" + -ed
  • For example, "Travel" becomes "Travelled"

Past continuous
  • You use the pastt continuous when:
  • You talk about something that was going on in the past;
  • For example, "I was calling you when you watched a movie"
  • "He was talking when the teacher called his name."
  • Or what you were doing;
  • For example, "I was trying to be helpful."

You make the past continuous with:
  • Was/were + verb + -ing
  • For example, "I was writing a poem while I was travelling by train."

  • Words ending with short vowel + consonant
  • Example: Plan -> Planning (double consonant)
