Map symbols are pictorial representations of features on a map. They help identify physical and human-made features.

Eastings and Northings
Eastings run vertically, Northings run horizontally. They help locate points on a map grid.

4-Figure Grid References
A 4-figure grid reference identifies a square on the map. It's given as (Eastings, Northings).

Creating 4-Figure Grid References
To create a 4-figure reference, find the bottom-left corner of the grid square using eastings and northings.

6-Figure Grid References
A 6-figure grid reference gives more precise location. It uses (Eastings, Northings) with additional digits.

For a 6-figure reference, estimate the position within the grid square to add a third digit to both Eastings and Northings.
