Learning goals
At the end of this lesson:
  • I know what is important for achieving a good grade for a test.
  • I know what ways/methods are suitable for which subject.
  • I discovered what method of learning for a certain subject works for other people and I can judge if that
might work for me as well!

Program
  1. How do you learn?
  2. The brains, how do they learn?
  3. The learning cycle
  4. Different subjects, different methods
  5. Learning from each other
  6. Perhaps also usefull to know
  7. Evaluate

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

1. How do you learn?
On the next slide please write:

- How you handle learning for/preparing a test.
- How many days in advance you start learning.
- Other important things?

3. The learning cycle
How do you obtain knowledgde for a test?
What is the learning pit?

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

The growth of knowledge:
Learning for a test starts during the lessons:
  1. You focus during the lessons and practice new subject matter.
  2. By making homework you practice what you learn in class.
  3. For a test you divide the subject matter in parts.
  4. You make the test to find out if you indeed master the subject matter.

Why is it important to make homework?

Slide 11 - Woordweb

4. Different subjects, different methods
For a language subject you learn in a different way than for history, and for math you learn in a different way than for Dutch.

Some people are better in English, other people in history. Let's use each other's talents!

Let's get to work!

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Making a manual
  • We make a learning manual for each subject.
  • Per subject (that you have to learn for) three students will work on the manual. They have to be good at this subject.
  • Talk and discuss with each other and fill in one form per subject. Discuss all questions so that the forms contain as much information as possible. Write down many tips and suggestions!
  • The manual that you and your group make needs to really help classmates who are not very good at this subject!

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

5. Learning from each other
We present the manuals that you made.
All subjects have to present!

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

6. Perhaps also useful to know

The following tips are general.
This means they apply to all subjects and can be useful when studying or preparing for a test.

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

General tips
  1. Study in 30 minute blocks
  2. Take breaks
  3. Repeat daily
  4. Start studying/preparing for a test on time

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Use different ways to study
  1. Read the material out loud
  2. Make a summary
  3. Compare your summary with a classmate's summary
  4. Highlight the essentials (most important things)
  5. Use different ways to study vocabulary
  6. Make your own test questions
  7. Divide the subject matter in parts

Studying, how do you do it?

Some say: I just read everything through many times.....

Did you know that ........   when reading things through A LOT   ........ you remember VERY LITTLE?
and ........  it costs you SOOOOOOOO MUCH time....

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

je van........VEEL lezen........ HEEL WEINIG onthoudt?
Active-reading
Lazy-reading
1. You read 'single words'.
2. You 'saw' the sentences.
3. You 'read' the text.
You have no idea what the text is about (or just a little bit).
You can tell only a little bit about it.
  1. You take a notebook and write down the title.
  2. You read and then write down the keywords.
 3. You make a real effort to
     understand what the text is
     about.

You tell yourself or someone else what the text is about. You can explain it well. You use the words you wrote down.
Waste of your time
You read and you remember and you learn... that gives you free time later!
Homework: 'read p. 48 and 49.....'   Question: How do you read?
Reading is important!

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

When is it easier to remember information?
When someone explains or show you something....
.... then it's easier to remember the subject matter and you remember much (90%)
If you only hear or read something you only remember about 10%.
To learn/study
Hear 5%
Reading 10%
Audio-visual 20%
Demonstration 30%
Discussion 50%
Do 75%
Explain to/show someone 90%

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

Er zijn verschillende soorten vragen
There are different kind of questions
Think about
which subjects often use certain kinds of questions.
When you question yourself or let yourself be questioned by someone... use that kind of questions.
