New labour > Writing
You are going to write an essay of 250-300 words in which you explore the pros and cons of being in a traditional job. The essay has to have a thesis like 'Would ... be the career for me?' and explore different aspects (both positive and negative) of having such a job.

Look at p. 16 of your student file. Assignment 49. Read along!

Writing: making a plan
Step 2a: The basics

Before doing your online research, you first need to think of the basics.
In Word (or another app), you need to create a 'plan', which contains the basics of your essay. The basics are: the thesis statement (use the example in your student file), the arguments (in this case, the (dis)advantages of this career you chose). You can do your research online, you don't have to think of everything yourself!

Writing an essay: basic rules
Step 2b: The basics
Your essay plan always contains the following:
- Title
- Thesis statement
- Introduction: what information are you giving your reader?
- Body: 2 paragraphs, each paragraph has the main points/arguments
- Conclusion: how will you wrap up your essay?
- Linking words: Firstly, secondly, in conclusion, for example, however, etc.

Writing: structure
Step 3: The 'hamburger' structure

Your essay needs to be structured. We
always write in paragraphs, and each
paragraph has a purpose. For this essay,
you can decide to write 4/6 paragraphs!
(e.g.: introduction, body: 2 paragraphs
(or 4) & conclusion).

Writing paragraphs
Step 4: Starting a paragraph

Your paragraph always needs to start with a topic sentence. Your topic sentence should include: the topic and the main point/theme of the paragraph. After the topic sentence, you explain and give examples to prove your argument/support your main point/theme.

Never (and we mean NEVER)
introduce new arguments or
points in your conclusion!
(Otherwise, it wouldn't be called
a conclusion)
