Task 1: Dutch versus English.

• In pairs, say the Dutch and English alphabet aloud.
• Compare the sounds.
• Which letters make different sounds?

The letter 'a'

Step 1: Read the words.

Step 2: How many sounds can the letter 'a' make?

Answer: The letter 'a' can make three different sounds:

long 'a' = 'ay' - stay           short 'a' = 'a' - fast

The letter 'y'

Step 1: Read the sentences.

Step 2: Read the 'sound card'.

Step 3: Read the sentences again.

When do you use the letter: i (or) y?
