Slide 9 - Tekstslide

The 'TH' sounds
2 types of 'TH' sounds:

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Soft 'TH' sound = /θ/
Words like: thanks, both, cloth, three, thirsty, thunderstorm

To produce /θ/ place the tip of the tongue against the back of the teeth and force the air between them.

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Harsh 'TH' sound = /ð/
Words like: these, rather, this, the, them, mother

For /ð/ use much less pressure and friction. It is also important to voice /ð/. Particularly at the beginnings of words make sure that you turn your voice on (i.e. start vibrating your vocal cords).

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Mistakes most Dutch people make
- There is no sound like  /ð/ or /θ/ in Dutch!

-  /s/ or /z/ = 'think' becomes 'sink'

- /d/ or /t/ = 'that' becomes 'det' / 'three' becomes 'tree'

- /f/ = 'bath' becomes 'baf' / 'three' becomes 'free'
