The Dutch revolution

Patriots were influenced by the American revolution and the Enlightenment. 

There was much discontent in the Netherlands:

>Decline of trade and industry

> Naval war with England. The Dutch lost > blamed stadholder Wilem V and the regents

The Dutch revolution

Patriots formed volunteer corps (armed citizens) and tried to overtake the regents and start a revolution.

This failed. Why?

The Dutch/Batavian revolution

jan 1795: Batavian legion (dutch who fled to france) and the French army march into Gelderland and Holland. 

> Regents gave up their power

> Willem V fled to England

> States General (staten generaal) declares birth of Batavian Republic (Bataafse Republiek)

The Dutch/Batavian revolution

What happened next? (page 92)

1798: New constitution

> Netherlands become a unitary state (eenheidsstaat)
