The northern provinces signed the Akte van Verlatinghe in 1581. In this document, they wrote: "Kings should protect their people and help them. King Philip has not protected us, but he has abused and hurt us badly, so he can no longer be our king!"

10 juli 1584
Filips II had Willem van Oranje in 1580 vogelvrij verklaard: iedereen mocht hem ongestraft vermoorden en zou daarvoor goed worden beloond.
Lukte het de Fransman Balthasar Gerards wél om Willem van Oranje te vermoorden.
Balthasar begaf zich op dinsdag 10 juli 1584 rond het middaguur naar het Prinsenhof met de mededeling dat hij Willem wilde spreken. Willems vrouw Louise van Coligny schijnt nog bezorgd te hebben gevraagd wie dat ongure type wel was, maar werd gerustgesteld.
Willem meldde Balthasar dat hij hem na het middageten te woord zou staan. Balthasar keerde terug naar herberg De Diamant om zijn pistolen te halen.
Rond half twee verliet het gezelschap de eetzaal. Toen Willem van Oranje zijn voet op de eerste trede van de trap zette schoot Balthasar hem van dichtbij in de borst en de zij. De prins zakte in elkaar en sprak - volgens het officiële verslag - zijn beroemde laatste woorden: "Mon Dieu, ayezpitié de mon âme, et de ce pauvre peuple!", vertaald als: "Mijn God, heb medelijden met mij en mijn arme volk!".
Volgens recente onderzoeken zou hij op slag dood moeten zijn geweest en heeft hij deze woorden niet gezegd.
