An essay is a written collection of prose, organized and divided neatly into paragraphs.

Remember that an essay is a written form of communication and therefore must be clear and easily understandable to most readers.

State or support an opinion with proof and explanation.
Essays can be used to persuade others to agree with your opinion.

Literary essay
A short text that tells about the big idea or theme of a book you've read.

It is NOT a summary (samenvatting) of the book or a description of the characters .

Layout/Structure
  1. Introduction (1  paragraph)

  3. Conclusion (1 paragraph)

Introduction
Your introduction (single paragraph) explains briefly about the story (don’t write a full summary, you can assume that I’ve read the book), names the author and leads into your thesis statement. (if you want to you can also start with a hook/attention grabber)

Thesis statement:
What it is that you’re going to argue/prove/analyze etc.
Should ALWAYS come at the end of your introduction!!

You’ll be given an essay question and from that one you’ll develop your thesis statement.

In other words, your thesis statement is your response to the question.
