Judging a Book by its Cover

Book covers can give you an idea of what a book is about and whether you'll enjoy it.

Talk to students about how they can use the cover of a book to make a decision and show examples.

Try Before You Buy

Read the first few pages of a book to see if it's a good fit for you.

We will use the next 2 lessons to try a book, so make sure you bring one!

Explain to students the importance of reading a sample of the book to make sure it's a good fit and show examples.

What to do now?

Do research: google booktitles and find out what kind of book you'd like to read.

You are allowed to read any book from the suggestions slide (previous page), or from the school library.

If you wish to read a book that is not on the suggestions slide, you must have it approved by your teacher first!!

Make sure you have your book by next lesson! (Monday 27-03)

Write down 2 things you want to know more about.

Here, students enter two things they would like to know more about. This not only increases involvement, but also gives them more ownership.

Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.

The students indicate here (in question form) with which part of the material they still have difficulty. For the teacher, this not only provides insight into the extent to which the students understand/master the material, but also a good starting point for the next lesson.
