Modal verbs you already know:

can = kunnen/mogen

to be able to = kunnen / in staat zijn om

could = zou kunnen

must = moeten

have to = moeten

should = zou moeten

can, could or be able to?

Be able to is possible in all tenses - 

but "can" is possible only in the present 

and "could" is possible only in the past for ability.

must, should or have to?

must - for personal opinions

should -  for advice

have to - when somebody in authority has said it is necessary to do.

New modal verbs in ch 4:

Ought to - zou moeten (more formal than should)

We ought to  be worried about the environment.

There ought to be more parks in the city. 

They ought to do more exercise.

may and might - to ask for or give permission

May I borrow the car tomorrow?

Students may travel for free. 

You may go now.
 

Might is an extremely polite way to ask permission.

may and might - when you are unsure 

I haven't received your letter. It may have got lost in the post.

She's had no sleep. She may be tired.

It's ten o'clock. They might have arrived by now.

It looks nice, but it might be very expensive.
