Prefixes - Voorvoegsels

Appears in front of the root of a word.

A root is a basic word to which you can add a prefix or suffix.

Pre = before

Prefix + root of word = new word

Examples: misinformation, reset, irregular

Common prefixes

Prefix	Meaning	Example
Un	not/ opposite	Un happy
Re-	Again	Re peat

Suffixes - Achtervoegsels

Appears behind the root of a word.

Suf = to add something behind

Root of word + suffix = new word

Examples: Useful, happiness, government

Common suffixes

-er	Changes root into the person performing the action	Drive - driv er
-ing	Changes the root into a different noun	The paint - The paint ing
-ful	Someone has a characteristic	Play - play ful
-ness	Changes adjective/adverb into a noun	Kind - kind ness
