Advancements in agrarian society
Around 1000 AD 90% lived as a farmer.
Some new inventions led to an increasing production:
  1. the three-field system
  2. land reclamation

  4. the horse collar

New cities
  • From 1000 AD, there was a calm period in Europe.
  • Tradespeople and merchants started buying up surpluses and selling them.
  • --> Led to fewer famines.
  • --> Europe's population
    started to grow.

From 1000, the Viking raids became less frequent, leading to a calmer period in Europe.
Tradespeople and merchants were able to travel freely again. They started buying up the surpluses created by agricultural advancements and selling them across larger regions.

Between 950 and 1300, the population of Europe doubled in size
New cities
  • Markets emerged along trade
    routes near a castle or church,
    at crossroads and river forks,
    and near coastal ports.
