Present continuous and going to future

Lesson Aims

After this lesson you are able to...

use the present continuous future and the be going to future correctly

Present continuous future

De present continuous gebruik je voor de tegenwoordige tijd maar ook voor de toekomst.

In de future(toekomst) gebruik je deze tijd om te praten over afspraken in de nabije toekomst.
Deze afspraken staan vast. De tijd/plaats ervan staat vast.

Present continuous

Zo vorm je de present continuous:

am/are/is
+
werkwoord + ing

Voorbeelden present continuous

I am meeting him tomorrow at 6 pm.
We are flying to Italy next week.
James is running a marathon in April.
They are seeing a new film next week.

Ontkenning met present continuous

Wil je de present continuous in een ontkenning gebruiken?
Voeg not toe aan am/are/is.

 
I am not seeing her tonight.
James is not/isn't running a marathon in April.

Let op!

Je kunt niet altijd de present  continuous in de toekomst gebruiken.
Je gebruikt 'am/are/is going to' wanneer:
- het om een plan gaat, om iets dat niet vaststaat.
- voor dingen waar je geen controle over hebt, zoals het weer.
Is the sun going to shine today?
We aren't going to buy souvenirs.

examples of going to

I'm going to call him on Saturday -> staat nog niet vast

I'm going to buy new jeans-> staat nog niet vast

It's going to rain tomorrow-> heb ik geen controle op

The leaves are going to fall-> heb ik geen controle op
