When?
*To give extra information WITHOUT starting a new sentence.*

Which 'relative pronouns' are there?
* who / whom (die) - used with people
That man, who has very nice hair, stole my dog!
To whom did you give my dog?

* which  (dat)- used with things/ animals
Do you see the sheep which has black wool?

* which (wat) - refer to a whole sentence
He can't read, which surprised me.

* whose (van wie) - used with people & things (possessive form)
That is the girl whose dog I've stolen.

* that (die/dat) - people, animals, things
I don't like the man that stole my dog.

Use or don't use?
*You can never leave out a relative pronouns there's a verb behind it.
               I told you about the woman who lives next door.
              The apple which is lying on the table is not very pleasant.
*You can leave out relative pronouns when there's no verb behind it
              The apple (which) George lay on the table is very nice.
              The car (which) the bankrobbers escaped in was green.

Comma or no comma?
Defining relative clauses give detailed information. With this, you never use a comma.
Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom? 
The boy (who) we met yesterday is very nice.
Non-defining relative clauses give extra information. You always use a comma. You can't use the word that.
Do you know the girl, who is talking to Tom?
Jim, whom we met yesterday, is very nice.
