Present perfect vs.
present perfect continuous

  • Present perfect: has/have + past participle (You have studied the theme words.)
  • Present perfect continuous: has/have been + infinitive + ing (You have been studying the theme words.)
  • Both tenses refer to unfinished actions that started in the past and are still true in the present. However, there are differences between the two.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

When to use the present perfect continuous:
Something has started in the past and it is still going on:
  • My father has been painting since 9 o'clock.
Something has been going on for too long in your opinion; something isn't finished yet:
  • They have been waiting for hours.
  • Sue has been watching TV all morning.
  • I have been working very hard for this assignment, but it's not finished yet.
Something has been happening more often lately:
  • People have been phoning me all day.
  • It has been raining a lot since January.

Is there something which strikes you when it comes to the type of verbs being used here?
