The governance of the Netherlands
The Netherlands was in the Middle Ages nothing
more than some provinces that governed
themselves.

The Spanish Charles V was the king of these provinces and wanted to centralise the Netherlands: 
an area that is governed from 1 central
point or person. 
He did that with:
  1. More and higher taxes
  2. Laws that apllied everywhere
  3. Persecuting protestants

Philip II (the son of Charles V) inherited the power from 1555. 

He appointed a:

  • A lot of protestants started field preaching: a church service outside. 
  • Some protestants even destroyed the catholic churches as a form of revolt: Iconoclastic Fury.

Philip was furious and took immediate measures. 
  • The  Duke of Alva became governor
  • He set up a court (= council of troubles)
     that punished everyone who 
     participated in the iconoclastic fury.

In the Netherlands, most people were protestants. They were against the persecution of protestants. 
Dutch people were against the high taxes.
