Het onderwerp voert een actie uit.
I paint the room.
Passive Voice
(lijdende vorm)

Het onderwerp overkomt iets.

The room was painted (by me).
En daardoor verandert de werkwoordstijd en wisselen zinsdelen van plek.

How to recognise the Passive Voice?
PASSIVE VOICE: always consists of
  1. form of the auxiliary TO BE + a past participle 
    for example: is arrested, has been stolen, will be made

  2. sometimes a by-clause with the doer of the action
    for example: by the police, by my sister, by teachers

ACTIVE to PASSIVE VOICE in small steps
The police arrested my brother yesterday.
  1. Object becomes subject > My brother ...
  2. Choose form of TO BE same tense as verb (simple past) > was > My brother was ...
  3. Select the past participle form of the main verb: arrested My brother was arrested ...
  4. Add BY + subject > My brother was arrested by the police ... 
  5. Add rest> My brother was arrested by the police yesterday.
