In the 1970s, there was a drought in California and some people made their swimming pools into skating ramps.
In the 1940s and ’50s, surfers invented skateboards so that they could practise on land when there weren’t any waves.
Skateboarding became an Olympic sport.
People started to ride skateboards on footpaths and in car parks.
